Craftsmanship
For over 400 years, the narrow lanes of Sanganer and Bagru — two villages on the outskirts of Jaipur — have echoed with the rhythmic thud of carved teakwood blocks meeting dye-soaked cotton. This is hand block printing: one of India's oldest textile traditions, and one that European fashion buyers are rediscovering with remarkable enthusiasm.
But why? In an era of digital printing, automated machinery and three-day turnarounds, why are conscious boutiques in Germany, the Netherlands, and Scandinavia increasingly asking for this slow, labour-intensive, centuries-old craft?
Hand block printing is exactly what it sounds like. A master craftsman — called a chhippa — carves a design into a dense teakwood block, sometimes working for weeks on a single intricate motif. The block is pressed into a tray of natural or AZO-free dye paste, then stamped onto pre-washed cotton fabric stretched across a padded table. Repeat, repeat, repeat — one block at a time, metre by metre.
The result is something no digital printer can replicate: a slight irregularity in alignment, a breath of variation in ink depth, the faint ghost of the block's edge. These are not imperfections. They are proof of the human hand — and they are exactly what makes block-printed textiles so visually alive.
The Sanganer printing tradition dates to the 16th century, when Rajput rulers patronised artisan communities to produce fabrics for royal courts. The chhippa families who practice this craft today are often 10th or 12th generation — children grow up watching their parents carve blocks, mix dyes, and stamp fabric before they can read.
This unbroken lineage means knowledge transfer that no training manual can replicate. The understanding of how cotton fibres absorb different dyes, which wood grains carve cleanest, how to achieve a perfect repeat across 20 metres of fabric — all of this lives in the hands and eyes of artisans, not in any machine.
Three forces are converging to bring block print back to the centre of European fashion buying:
EU textile regulations are tightening. The European Green Deal and incoming Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR) rules are pushing brands toward traceable, natural-fibre supply chains. Block-printed cotton ticks every box: natural fibre, natural or low-impact dyes, minimal mechanical processing, and a supply chain that begins with a named artisan, not an anonymous factory.
Fast fashion has made consumers acutely aware of mass production. When a customer pays €80 for a blouse, they want to know it's not hanging in 10,000 other wardrobes. Block-printed garments offer inherent uniqueness — no two pieces are identical, and a small boutique can order a colourway that no other shop carries.
Modern retail is as much storytelling as it is product. A garment with a 400-year-old craft tradition behind it, made by a named artisan community in Jaipur, gives boutique owners something to talk about — on their website, their Instagram, their in-store labels. That story justifies the price point and creates customer loyalty that fast fashion never can.
One of the most powerful aspects of working directly with a Jaipur manufacturer is the ability to commission exclusive prints. Rather than choosing from a catalogue that dozens of other boutiques also order from, buyers can work with our design team to develop a print that belongs exclusively to their brand.
This can mean adapting a traditional motif — a buta, a paisley, a geometric tile — into a colourway and scale that fits your brand identity. Or it can mean starting from scratch: sending us your mood board and letting our block carvers develop something entirely new.
Minimum order for a custom block carving is 200 pieces per design. For orders from our existing library, MOQ starts at just 30 pieces per style.
The strongest demand for Jaipur block print in Europe currently comes from:
Our Germany office in Friedberg means shorter lead times for DACH buyers, easier sample review, and the ability to meet in person — removing the friction that traditionally made Indian sourcing feel distant.
We ship from our Germany office to all EU countries. Samples available. MOQ from 30 pieces.
